Various approaches to control solid/solid wetting self-assembly of organic semiconductors with STM

چکیده
Organic solid/solid wetting deposition (OSWD) is an easy, low cost method to prepare epitaxial monolayers of organic semiconductors under ambient conditions. This chapter describes various approaches to induce complexity into highly ordered monolayers with Scanning Tunnelling Microscopy (STM): nanomanipulated self-assembly aiming towards molecular data storage, locally guided selfassembly to achieve complex nanowire arrays, and dip-pen induced coadsorption to achieve mixed domains of different semiconductors. These approaches demonstrate the potential of OSWD for the development of supramolecular nanoelectronics and photonics.

Supramolecular self-assembly initiated by solid-solid wetting.
We present a preparation method for self-assembled supra-molecular monolayers of unsubstituted organic semiconductors and pigments on a solid substrate, applicable under ambient conditions. The deposition is based on a solid-solid wetting phenomenon, whereas the subsequent layer growth proceeds according to standard models. Molecular adsorption results from direct contact of the compound in a n...
متن کاملSTM study on the self-assembly of oligothiophene-based organic semiconductors
The self-assembly properties of a series of functionalized regioregular oligo(3-alkylthiophenes) were investigated by using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) at the liquid-solid interface under ambient conditions. The characteristics of the 2-D crystals formed on the (0001) plane of highly ordered pyrolitic graphite (HOPG) strongly depend on the length of the π-conjugated oligomer backbone, o...
متن کاملSelf-Assembly and Electronic Properties of Conjugated Molecules: Towards Mono-Molecular Electronics
The use of single molecules as active components in electronic devices is presently considered a potential alternative to semiconductor-based nanoscale electronics since it directly provides precisely-defined nano-scale components for electronic devices which eventually allows for simple processing and device fabrication. In the present thesis the self-assembly and electron transport properties...
متن کاملStructural polymorphism in self-assembled networks of a triphenylene based macrocycle.
Understanding and controlling the structural polymorphism in self-assembled networks of functional molecules merit special attention. In this contribution, we describe the concentration controlled structural evolution in self-assembled monolayers of a large triangular discotic macrocycle at the liquid-solid interface. Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) reveals that the adlayers formed by an al...
متن کاملHalogen bonds in 2D supramolecular self-assembly of organic semiconductors.
Weak interactions between bromine, sulphur, and hydrogen are shown to stabilize 2D supramolecular monolayers at the liquid-solid interface. Three different thiophene-based semiconducting organic molecules assemble into close-packed ultrathin ordered layers. A combination of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and density functional theory (DFT) elucidates the interactions within the monolayer. ...
